The 2nd phase 5G-PPP projects blueSPACE, 5G-PHOS, 5G-PICTURE and Metro-Haul jointly organized a workshop and cross-pollination meeting on Optical Fronthaul and Backhaul Technologies for 5G Networks in connection with the IEEE Conference on Photonics in Switching and Computing 2018. The workshop aimed at highlighting the most recent advances in optical and networking technologies for 5G front- and backhaul – both within the involved and represented 5G-PPP projects from the first and second phase, as well as the international context. The workshop further served to establish direct connections between the projects and to initiate and foster collaboration through the identification of common goals and approaches and definition of joint activities.
To achieve these goals, the organizing projects assembled a collection of high-level speakers from the involved projects and related international initiatives, including both academia and industry. With eleven speakers from Europe, Japan and Australia and a total attendance of more than twenty experts from all over the globe, the workshop covered many of the latest advancements in optical fronthaul and backhaul technologies for 5G networks and successfully stimulated discussions across continents and gave the starting impulse for future collaborations.
The cross-pollination workshop was organized in co-location with the IEEE Conference on Photonics in Switching and Computing 2018, a long-running and successful conference organized annually and hosted by Europe, North America and Japan in turn, bringing the projects’ and speakers’ expertise in optical technology to the attention of a larger photonics community and showing potential similarities and synergies between related fields of optical communications.
The organizing committee of the workshop consisted of a representative of each of the co-organizing projects, including Dr. Chris Vagionas (@ChrisVagionas) for 5G-PHOS (@5GPHOSsocial), Dr. Jim Zou for 5G-PICTURE (@5GPICTURE), Dr. Chigo Okonkwo (@Chigo_Okonkwo) for Metro-Haul (@MetroHaul) and Dr. Simon Rommel (@simon_rommel) of blueSPACE (@blueSPACE_5G) as committee chair.
The full programme of the cross-pollination workshop, including the speakers’ presentations for download is found below.
