Report on Workshop at CAMAD2018 on 5G Wireless and Optical Technologies for Mobile Communication Systems

The 2nd phase 5G-PPP projects 5G-PHOS, blueSPACE, 5G-PICTURE and 5G ESSENCE jointly organized a workshop on 5G Wireless and Optical Technologies for Mobile Communication Systems as a Special Session of the IEEE International Workshop on Computer-Aided Modeling Analysis and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD) 2018. The workshop aimed to highlight the most recent advances in 5G wireless and optical technologies for mobile communication systems – both within the involved and represented 5G-PPP projects, as well as in the international context. To achieve these goals, a collection of six high-level speakers from the involved projects and related international initiatives were selected after peer review of their respective submissions to the special session. 

The workshop was organized within the IEEE International Workshop on Computer-Aided Modeling Analysis and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD) 2018. The International Workshop on Computer-Aided Modeling Analysis and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD) provides a forum for discussion of recent developments on analytical and simulation tools and techniques for the performance evaluation of communications systems. It was launched in 1986, being held every 2 years until 2006, often in cooperation with flagship IEEE Communication Society conferences. Since 2006, the workshop has been held every year motivated by the ever increasing interest in this hot research and development field. Since 2009, CAMAD is an IEEE Communications Society portfolio event. IEEE CAMAD 2018 was held as a stand-alone event on 17th–19th September 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. 

This year IEEE CAMAD focused on Communication and Experimentation aspects of 5G Networking and beyond. IEEE CAMAD hosted workshops and special sessions, bringing together a diverse group of scientists, engineers, manufacturers and providers to exchange and share their experiences and new ideas focusing on research and innovation results in the 5G domain. In addition to contributed papers, the conference also included keynote speeches, panel and demo sessions.  

The organizing committee of the workshop consisted of a representative of each of the co-organizing projects, including Dr. George Kalfas for 5G-PHOS, Dr. Anna Tzanakaki for 5G-PICTURE, Dr. Ioannis Chochliouros for 5G ESSENCE and Prof. Idelfonso Tafur Monroy of blueSPACE.
